Trip Overview

Located in the remote southwestern region of Nepal, Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve sprawls across an area of 155 square kilometers, set to expand to 305 square kilometers upon completion of its extension. Named after the expansive Suklaphanta grasslands, this reserve serves as a vital refuge for a myriad of threatened species, including the hispid hare and the pygmy hog, whose populations find sanctuary within its verdant expanse.

Suklaphanta's diverse ecosystem also shelters the iconic barasingha, or swamp deer, safeguarding its dwindling numbers. Amidst the grasslands, visitors can encounter a plethora of wildlife, from the majestic spotted deer and agile hog deer to the graceful nilgai and elusive wild dog. The territory also boasts a small population of tigers, often spotted prowling through the open terrain, alongside occasional sightings of wild elephants.

A highlight of the reserve is Rani Tal, a picturesque lake teeming with avian and mammalian life. Here, herons, ducks, storks, kingfishers, and egrets converge, while swamp deer luxuriate in the shallows. Observing this bustling ecosystem from a nearby machan offers a unique and unforgettable experience, with thousands of waterfowl dotting the lake's surface as twilight descends, accompanied by the serene grazing of swamp deer along the water's edge.

Exploring Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve offers various avenues to witness its rich biodiversity, from exhilarating land rover safaris along the lakes and rivers to immersive nature walks guided by seasoned trackers. Each encounter promises to unveil the hidden wonders of this remote wilderness, inviting visitors to connect with nature in its purest form.
