Trip Overview

Situated at an impressive elevation of 2563m and located north of Kathmandu, Shivapuri stands as the second highest hill in the vicinity of the Kathmandu valley. It holds particular significance as Bagdwar, the sacred source of the Bagmati River, lies in close proximity to Shivapuri.

Embark on an early morning journey from Kathmandu, a scenic drive of approximately 30 minutes, to Muhan Pokhari. Upon arrival, complete the necessary formalities at the Shivapuri entrance gate before entering the Shivapuri watershed and wildlife area. Your hiking adventure commences from the southern boundary of the area, marked by an army check-post. The trail meanders along a rugged yet navigable road, passing through enchanting pine and cherry forests, leading you to Nangi Gompa within one and a half hours. Here, nestled amidst the wilderness, lies a nunnery monastery, offering a serene respite.

Beyond the monastery, the trail ascends steeply through dense oak, rhododendron, and bamboo forests, a journey lasting approximately three hours. Along this challenging ascent, be rewarded with stunning vistas of the snow-capped Himalayas, including Ganesh Himal, Langtang-Lirung, and Dorji Lhakpa, immersing yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty of the region.

Following this unforgettable experience, descend via a shortcut trail, reaching Budhanilkantha in about two and a half hours. Budhanilkantha, renowned for its ancient stone-carved deity of Lord Vishnu reclining on a serpent, offers a fascinating glimpse into Nepalese culture and spirituality.

Conclude your day's adventure by returning to Kathmandu, where memories of the breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage will linger long after your journey's end.
