Trip Overview

Established primarily for the protection of the rare wild water buffaloes, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve spans an area of 175 square kilometers, extending northward with a one-kilometer-long barrage spanning the Koshi River. The expansive water body created by the barrage, along with marshes, lagoons, mudflats, and arable land, forms an exceptional wetland ecosystem, establishing it as one of Asia's premier bird watching sanctuaries.

A highlight of Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is its extensive network of nature trails, offering ample opportunities for immersive nature walks. Exploring the grasslands, river lagoons, and woodlands on foot provides a rewarding experience for those with curiosity and perseverance.

The optimal time to visit this remarkable wildlife sanctuary is between October and March, when migratory and local bird species flock to the barrage and river channels. Additionally, this period offers stunning views of numerous Himalayan peaks, including the majestic Makalu I, the world's fifth-highest mountain.

Accessing Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is convenient via air, land, or river. A short 45-minute flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar is followed by a mere one-and-a-half-hour drive to the camp. Alternatively, embarking on an exhilarating 8-10 day rafting expedition down the wild stretches of the Sun Koshi River provides a thrilling approach to the destination. For those preferring a scenic drive, a picturesque journey through the countryside spanning approximately 500 kilometers offers another option, albeit requiring nearly 10 hours from Kathmandu.

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve serves as an enticing alternative destination for visitors who have already explored Royal Chitwan National Park and Bardia National Park, promising a unique and unforgettable wildlife experience amidst Nepal's natural splendor.
